Fruits And Veggies To Avoid When Losing Weight

In most diets fruits and veggies are referred as “unlimited”, but the truth is, some fruits and veggies are better than others. All of them are good for you in the long run, but if you’re trying to lose weight you should limit your consumption of a few of them so you can see the maximum results in a short time.

Most fruits and vegetables are low in calories, and high in fiber – two essential ingredients for weight loss, but some of them contain high levels of sugars that can slower your weight loss.

Below I’ve put together a list of foods you should avoid when trying to lose weight.

Fruits and vegetables are great foods to eat while dieting, but you should avoid some more than others in order to lose weight.

Dried fruit

Dried fruits have almost all their water removed, which means that you’re eating more calories per portion. For example 1 cup of dried bananas has 400 calories, and one cup of dried peaches has 360 calories. If you want to lose weight while dieting you should strict the portion sizes when it comes to dried fruits.


Avocados are high in fats and calories, and one cup contains 384 calories! However, the fat found in avocados is monounsaturated, which helps lower bad cholesterol, so eating an avocado every now and then is good for you as long as you eat them in moderation.

Juice blends

Some days is difficult to get your daily fruit and vegetable intake, and the best alternative are vegetable juice blends. Try to make your own juice blends at home, because many bottled vegetable juices contain high levels of sugar and salt.

Tropical fruit

 Sweet Potatoes

We all love sweet potatoes, but they’re not the lowest-calorie vegetable around. A cup of mashed potatoes has 249 calories. Try to replace them with veggies like spinach, kale or lettuce which contains less than 20 calories.

Now maybe you’re asking yourself how much fruits and vegetables should you eat. One potion of fruit or vegetable is equivalent to 80g. In the list below you can find some examples of what counts as a portion.  

  • 1 banana, apple, orange, pear or other similar sized fruit
  • ½ avocado or grapefruit
  • 3 dried apricots
  • 150 ml (small glass) of pure fruit juice (no added sugar)
  • 1 dessert bowl of salad
  • 1 cupful of cherries, berries or grapes
  • 3 heaped tablespoons of stewed fruit or fruit salad
  • 3 heaped tablespoons of pluses, beans or vegetables
  • 1 slice of melon
  • 2 satsumas, plums, kiwi fruit or other similar sized fruits
